pbxnsip Demonstrates Interoperability with Nokia E61

TMCnet News

pbxnsip’s award-winning SIP-based IP PBX was successfully tested against Nokia’s (News - Alert) latest cell phone, the E61 recently. Using Wireless LAN and SIP, Nokia’s device can now be integrated into the office communication infrastructure and become a regular extension.

The cell phone supports use in parallel with other SIP devices while moving through the office and by using web-based services, users can also access the PBX and through the web and take advantage of other web-based PBX services including presence.

Using the device both for SIP-based and cell phone-based telephone communication offers unification of address books and other applications in a very natural way. Also, by having the device registered to the office infrastructure, there are no additional costs for office calls and fixed-line rates as opposed to cellular rates can be used for outbound office calls.

“Considering the large number of cell phones being sold, the WLAN-based cell phone will soon outnumber any other sold SIP user agent”, says Kevin Moroz, VP sales of pbxnsip. “By being compatible with the Nokia E61 device we can address a very large user base.”

The short history of the cell phone has proven that once a feature makes it into a device its likely stay there. The relatively small extra cost for having WLAN access lets us assume that almost all devices will have this technology incorporated over the next couple of years and you will have to search for a cell phone that does not offer SIP.

“The road ahead is to make configuration easier. Today, it is just too complicated to set devices up for a regular user”, says Moroz. “But cell phone history has shown us that the sheer number of users make even complicated technology, eventually usable.”
