There’s a new set of predictions for the industry and videoconferencing, brought to us by Avistar (News - Alert) Communications. By its predictions, we’ll be seeing BYOD, cloud-based communications, and interoperability come into play as important industry trends, so keep an eye on those.
Given the rising demand and acceptance of employees bringing their own devices, BYOD will become an accepted approach to office technology. It does, after all, provide flexibility and lowers costs spent on devices for employees, so it’s easy to see why companies would be accepting of it. There are still certain security issues, but there are solutions that address those problems.
Similarly, telecommuting will become more mainstream. 9.5 percent of American workers are now working from home, two million more than in 2005. Many employees are working at least part of the week from their home offices, which ties together with the increased need for BYOD.
Then we have videoconferencing. According to the predictions, we’ll be seeing an increase in videoconferencing in the cloud, as well as demand for VDI-enabled videoconferencing. As cloud-based videoconferencing becomes available to everyone, regardless of where they are and the device they use (once again connecting to BYOD), its popularity will grow so much that the sector will likely become composed mostly of it. Of course, there will still be customers who want the choice between cloud, on-premise, or hybrid solutions, so those won’t disappear.
However, interoperability will remain an issue. There’s still no commitment to interoperability across the industry, so this will cause no small amount of annoyance for people trying to communicate across different platforms. However, that also means that apps that can connect to competing ones will see more attention, as they will be in higher demand.
The predictions also note that Chief Mobility Officers will be in higher demand, and green tech will reach the point where it becomes a more viable option. For the most part, though, it all ties back to BYOD. People want choices, and they want the convenience of being able to use the devices they’re familiar with. As such, the industry is shifting to accommodate those needs, and solutions that are useful for BYOD will be seeing growth.
