Workplace Monitoring Could be Businesses' New Best Friend

By Maurice Nagle, TMCnet Web Editor

Big brother is a very real concept that is becoming more tangible each and every day—no, I am not just talking about the NSA.  Whether big brother is the government, a boss or a friend posting a video on Facebook (News - Alert), one’s life is constantly monitored for better or worse. Businesses have turned this into an insightful way to improve the way they function, not to mention the bottom line.

Companies like to know what employees are doing, much like a parent wants to know what their child is up to or the government must know what the “evil doers” are plotting.  TMCnet’s Kasey Schefflin-Emrich reported today on a new spyware offering companies greater ability to monitor employees. The monitoring space is trending toward growth and will be for some time as long as usable analytical data is produced.

The New York Times reported, based on workplace analytics data received through monitoring from a third party, that workers are more productive when social.  Employers hear this and are adjusting to the data; one bank affords employees “water cooler time” in a shared 15-minute coffee break.  Another business renovated its office, and created an open café allowing free socialization.  The results from both of the above scenarios speak for themselves; less turnover and more importantly higher sales.

Some businesses have chosen to create more communal work stations through shared spaces and lowering cubicle walls.  The office is transforming before society’s eyes to a more social place and in doing more productive.

Monitoring is a double sided coin where the Pros outweigh the cons.  Businesses that have employed monitoring have seen positive results.  Intelligent monitoring software leverage innovation to allow employers a new look through the looking glass at what employees are up to and what can be improved upon.  These analytics are priceless when a company is surging toward its next step, and the higher the priority, the faster the innovation of solutions, and the bigger big brother’s presence gets.
