International Rugby Board Turns to 3rd Party Remote Call Monitoring

By Alisen Downey, TMCnet Web Editor

Sometimes contact center technology can surprise you. Take, for instance, 3rd party remote call monitoring. While you might expect this type of solution to be implemented in a contact center, where compliance is a big concern, plenty of industries must bend under the will of heavy regulations and threat of fraud.

One unlikely place to find 3rd-party remote call monitoring is in rugby. With next year's Rugby World Cup being divided by classic “have” and “have-not” player lines, many are concerned that the set-up will breed a higher likelihood of match-fixing. For those rugby players who have worked tirelessly over the years with very little financial gain in the sport, the temptation of match-fixing is real. While plenty of rugby players make a pretty penny for their time in the sport, there are just as many who never make it big. Why not make a few bucks under the table to make ends meet, and justify all that time devoted to a sport that yields such small monetary incentives?

"The concern is high," said International Rugby Board (IRB) chief executive Brett Gosper, regarding match-fixing at the World Cup. And what do you think has been part of the solution in combating this concern? You guessed it: "We are using 3rd-party monitoring in a lot of our tournaments now. We pay a company to come in and monitor electronically across vast numbers of betting shops – registered and unregistered – to see if there is irregularity in the betting,” Gosper explained.

While many have suggested that betting on rugby matches is too rare to really be a problem, as the sport doesn’t lend itself well to fixing, Gosper and others feel that it’s worth safeguarding against the threat—even if it’s a slim one. For them, remote call monitoring is an easy way to ensure that a big scandal doesn’t mar the upcoming World Cup, thus protecting the sport’s integrity in the eyes of the global public.
