dPacket.org announced its formation with support from founding sponsors as well as the launch of its website: www.dpacket.org. The website will focus on global resource for information, discussion and collaboration on topics related to Deep Packet Inspection (DPI).
dPacket.org is supported by nine founding sponsor companies, which are the Allot (News - Alert) Communications, Bivio Networks, Cloudshield Technologies, Ellacoya Networks (now part of Arbor Networks), LSI Corporation, nPulse Networks, Qosmos, Sandvine and Solera (News - Alert) Networks.
DPI helps networks to control network traffic. Its use on the Internet, corporate, and government networks is rapidly increasing, primarily in areas such as network security, traffic optimization, content filtering and law enforcement. DPI also employed in the convergence of network-based services (e.g. voice, data, VOIP) and the consolidation of features in networking devices (e.g. combining traditional switching and routing
with advanced security and traffic optimization features).
The user-driven community of the new website (dPacket.org) not only will act as a technical resource but also will be an open community forum to educate, share information, and collaborate on a wide variety of DPI-related topics, including the creation of common frameworks and standards. Industry leaders and other stakeholders, through the site, could discuss issues relevant to the continued improvement of DPI technologies and its impact.
"We commend our founding sponsors for recognizing that education, collaboration, and transparency are needed for DPI to deliver maximum benefits, and for supporting dPacket.org's vision," said Kyle Rosenthal, executive director of dPacket.org. "Enhancing visibility and control in networks offers great promise, but also presents a comprehensive set of challenges: ethical, technical and legal. These must be addressed by the best minds in the field and a broad group of stakeholders so that DPI-enabled networks can deliver maximum benefit for all of us."
"LSI Corporation (News - Alert) is proud to be the first semiconductor company to sponsor dPacket.org," said Randy Smerik, senior vice president, Network Components Group, LSI Corporation. "Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) and the need to more intelligently manage networks are becoming increasingly important as new bandwidth-rich applications gain more and more traction. dPacket.org will help serve the whole industry by bringing together interested parties and fostering collaboration and discussion."
"Qosmos (News - Alert) is very pleased to be a founding sponsor of dPacket.org," said Jerome Tollet, CTO and Co-Founder of Qosmos. "The need not only to monitor and optimize network traffic but also to extract and monetize highly-accurate and reliable network information is opening new markets for DPI technology. dPacket.org is a unique online information source dedicated to DPI that will bring real value to both traditional DPI players as well as to all kinds of companies, whether in telecom, market research, financial services or elsewhere, who can create innovative applications based on the network intelligence enabled by advanced DPI solutions incorporating information extraction features such as those delivered by Qosmos."
dPacket.org is a non-profit organization founded for educational and scientific purposes to foster and support community interest and progress in Deep Packet Inspection and Processing.

There are many often too many explanation of routing. Heres one:
Hop-by-Hop Routing - IP Routing
- Distributes routing to routers
- Networks look/act like trees
- Data can traverse many routers ...more |
