Five Tips for Consumers to Combat Auto Dialer Debt Collectors

By Divya Narain, TMCnet Contributor

The following are five tips for consumers on how to deal with debt collectors who use auto dialers.

The most crucial thing is to know the general profile of the debt collectors. Most probably they are entry level professionals, using auto dialers, working on low wage eager to earn some extra cash for any recoveries they may make from errant debtors. They work over the phone and are extremely hostile as for these low level professionals it is always a make or break situation.

Firstly: It is best to get in touch with creditors and inform them about the missed payment deadline. This way the case would not reach the collection agency.

Secondly: Always know the various rules which protect the consumers. Information on Fair Debt Collections Practices Act, or the FDCPA, of the United States Federal Trade Commission are easily available in the various articles it publishes for consumer awareness. Any violations must be instantly brought to the notice of the FTC (News - Alert) and your State Attorney General’s office.

Thirdly: All the information regarding debts, payments or correspondences should be properly maintained and catalogued, preferably for five years. It is good to get all the information when corresponding with collection agencies. Calls can also be recorded, provided the agencies are informed in advance.

Fourthly: Protect your financial details. Financial information should not be made available over the phone.  Social Security and Disability funds should be kept in a distinct account as they do not come under judicial debt settlements.

Fifthly: Third party help. A  professional debt management service provider, non profit if possible, is best to get rid of pesky calls as well as get free guidance for comfortable payment plan based on personal credit reports.

Get in touch with a certified credit counselor at the earliest for a free debt support. You can Live Chat with a counselor on www.freedomdm.org. You may also get in an appointment with a counselor by filling the request form or calling 800.905.1563.
