RadiSys REDI Lab Proves itself with Dramatic Time-to-Market Cuts for Developers

By Marisa Torrieri, TMCnet Editor

If you're a developer, does spending upwards of $5,000 to shuttle an engineer to and from your company's headquarters - albeit, to spruce up a $50,000 AdvancedTCA, or ATCA, system -sound feasible?

It didn't to RadiSys (News - Alert), whose dedicated engineering staff wasmore than happy to oblige requests to tinkerwith and tailor ATCA platforms for a customer's unique needs. Butas technology evolved, so did the need to havepartners up and running much more quickly.

That is why, nearly two years ago, RadiSys launched what it calls the industry's first lab designed to allowglobal ecosystem partners and customers toremotely perform initial validation, testing and demonstrations of their unique solutions on RadiSys ATCA systems.

Today the facility, dubbed the REDI (RadiSys Ecosystem Demonstration and Interoperability) Lab, is accessible24/7 via a dedicated, secure broadband connection. Morethan two dozen RadiSys partnersand customershave used it to do everything from initial up-front testing to troubleshooting.

Physically located at company headquarters in Hillsboro, Oregon, the customized lab is outfitted with a RadiSys Promentum ATCA application-ready platform loaded with the latest hardware and software, giving users quick and efficient first-look interoperability testing in real-time.

'The idea for the REDI Lab initially beganwhen I was asked to make an ATCA platform accessible to customers across theworld who could easily leverage this concept for integratingand testing their products on next generation telecommunication platforms,' Arun Kalluri, product line manager and creative force behind the REDI Lab at RadiSys, told TMCnet. 'At the time, veryfew companiescouldquicklyintegrate and test their solutions on an ATCA platform. In the past we would ship our partners a large ATCA platform and, before even tackling a single test, our partners would devote a lot of time and energy to simply getting the system up and running.'

Managing complexplatforms isn't the only challenge the lab has met.

The REDI Lab has cut what used to take several weeks to hours -- the time that RadiSys and its partners previously dedicated to initial up-front testing and self-validation, as well as preparing and conducting sales demonstrations.

The high-resolution webcam, for instance, helps RadiSys partners observe platform activity in real time during testingand self-validation sessions,as well as perform remote demonstrationsto showcase product features to their customers.

'Before the labwas in place, it would take ourpartnersseveral weeks to address issues that arose during the validation process,' explained Kalluri. He added that the sophistication of newer technology - like the ATCA 4.0 platform, which will be launched this year - would make such a way of doing things incomprehensible, especially if one is new to ATCA technology or cannot access newer technologies like 40G. 'Now they can just remotely log in, and save precious development cost and time.'
