RadiSys Lands Strategic Partnerships with Aricent and 6WIND

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

RadiSys Corporation, a global provider of advanced embedded solutions, has announced a partnership with Aricent and 6WIND. This partnership was developed in an effort to deliver application-ready platforms for the Long Term Evolution (LTE (News - Alert)) Evolved Packet Core (EPC).

Due to the rapid growth of data traffic and mobile video usage and the fact that Service Providers are demanding quick delivery of next-generation networks to satisfy ever-increasing consumer demand, the opportunities for this partnership to flourish are substantial.

Telecom Equipment Manufacturers are also seeking solutions that enable shorter internal development cycles in order to deliver upon the time-to-market pressures they are facing. Pre-packaged network frameworks for building end deployable nodes provide TEMs with substantial savings in both time and cost for deployment.

“As the industry’s first 10G platform, RadiSys (News - Alert) has now delivered more than 35 different applications for our customers,” said Anthony Ambrose, Vice President and General Manager, Communications Networks, RadiSys, in a statement. “In order to provide TEMs looking to enter the LTE market with an even greater time-to-market advantage, we’ve partnered with Aricent (News - Alert) and 6WIND to deliver the industry’s first LTE-ready platform that can reduce deployment time by 50 percent.”

As a result of its collaboration with Aricent and 6WIND, RadiSys can deliver its market-proven ATCA Promentum platform. This comprehensive LTE signaling stack and efficient data path software all in one solution is fully integrated to lower development risk for TEMs and to reduce the time-to-market by as much as 18 months.

This partnership also brings together the benefits of scalability, high availability and ease of use. A pre-packaged solution, it combines RadiSys’ best-in-class ATCA hardware with 6WIND’s Datapath software (6WINDGate) and Aricent’s LTE stack framework.

“Aricent was recently recognized as a 2009 4GWE LTE Visionary Award recipient, a testament to our rich and comprehensive LTE solutions for all segments of the LTE network, from devices to the Evolved Packet Core, including eUTRAN,” said Rakesh Vij, assistant vice president at Aricent. “Our specialized LTE frameworks for RadiSys’ LTE-ready platform can help telecom equipment manufacturers create differentiated LTE offerings that can be deployed today, or implemented as part of an evolution to a next-generation network.”

As Aricent’s LTE EPC software frameworks are designed to be complete, pre-integrated control pane software modules suitable for LTE Macro/Micro EPC nodes, they support essential Serving Gateway (News - Alert), Packet Gateway and Mobility Management Entity capabilities.

By adding in the 6WIND Datapath, the solution is able to create a complete stack for packet processing. 6WIND's flagship software is ideally suited for LTE high performance equipment. It also provides a complete L2-L4 packet processing engine based on Fast Path, which is a data plane specifically optimized to benefit from multi-core performance.

“6WINDGate’s Fast Path-based architecture delivers one of the best possible packet processing performances in the industry, delivering close to 30 Mpps forwarding performance on a RadiSys packet processing board based on a dual CN5860 OCTEON™ processor architecture,”said Eric Carmès, CEO of 6WIND. “We are pushing the 20G limit on a single ATCA board. Our datapath efficiency which comes optimized within the platform is why 6WINDGate has been selected by major tier one telecommunications equipment manufacturers. Simply, our off-the-shelf ready optimizations allow them to instead focus their precious time and resources on getting to market quickly.”

The company announced last month that it is offering money-saving opportunities for the mobile video market. According to RadiSys, while the consumption of one-way video streaming services continues to grow, interactive two-way video communication services that ride on circuit-based video telephony 3G-324M standards present unique operational challenges for economical mass market deployment.

RadiSys is set to announce results for the third quarter of 2009 at 4:05 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009. Following the release, Scott Grout, CEO, and Brian Bronson, CFO, will host a conference call at 5 p.m. ET to discuss the company’s results, along with business highlights and the outlook.
