RadiSys Provides Industrys First 10 Gigabit, AdvancedTCA Platform

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Contributor

Embedded network solutions provider RadiSys forged ahead with market leadership in February by introducing their Promentum SYS-6010, the industry’s first 10 Gigabit, AdvancedTCA (News - Alert) (ATCA) managed platform targeted for use in high-bandwidth network element and dataplane applications.

RadiSys’ Promentum SYS (News - Alert)-6010  represents a first in its status as a “common, managed platform targeted for use in high-bandwidth network element and dataplane applications,” the company explained in a press release.

Service providers and telecommunications equipment manufacturers (TEMs) looking for the highest bandwidth available can’t do any better than SYS-6010. Combined with a series of new, modular building blocks, RadiSys’ ATCA platform can be used to create systems capable of delivering very high-bandwidth, traffic-bearing applications.

The RadiSys Promentum SYS-6010 and its associated modules offers the highest speed I/O, switching and packet processing capabilities available using a managed ATCA platform, as well as configurability for a variety of applications (including IP Multimedia Subsystem (News - Alert), Radio Network Controllers, Media Gateways, and Call Servers).

“Billions of dollars are being spent upgrading current infrastructure to handle more traffic and serve more subscribers and AdvancedTCA is becoming the architecture that will facilitate rapid developments in the industry,” said Crystal Core Consulting principal analyst Ernie Bergstrom, in a statement.

Bergstrom continued: “RadiSys is helping companies realize the benefits of AdvancedTCA on a broader scale with the SYS-6010. Their common managed platform approach will enable TEMs and service providers to keep up with technology advancements and changing customer requirements.”

RadiSys’ president and CEO, Scott Grout, commented that his company’s ATCA strategy goes behind merely developing individual building blocks.

“Delivering a common managed platform for network element and dataplane applications offers a significant benefit to our customers,” he said in a statement. “The SYS (News - Alert)-6010 will allow TEMs to use the same managed platform for a variety of applications, which can reduce their overall development time by up to 50 percent and significantly reduce development, lifecycle and equipment costs.”

RadiSys’ SYS-6010 offers the following key advantages:
  • Comprehensive system management for bandwidth-intensive applications
  • Modularly designed, embedded building blocks for seamless interoperability
  • Configurable Advanced Mezzanine Cards (AMCs) for functions such as network processing, input/output, and storage
  • Integrated data path and platform management software
Modular products designed for integration with SYS-6010 include:
  • ATCA-6006—a 6-slot, low profile 5U ATCA shelf for cost/space constrained applications
  • ATCA-2210—a 10 Gigabit switch and control module
  • ATCA-4300--a compute processing module with single or dual Intel (News - Alert) dual-core Xeon processors
  • ATCA-7800—an asymmetric, multi-processing compute module
  • ATCA-7400—a line card with AMC carrier card
  • AMC-3202SAS (News - Alert) hard disk AMC for high-density storage
  • ATCA-1000—Universal PMC Processing Module for applications such as signaling, softswitches, and media servers
  • ATCA-2100--Switch and Control Module with accommodations for GbE and Fibre Channel
  • ATCA-3000—Disk Storage Module for high performance Fibre Channel storage
  • ATCA-4000—Compute Processing Module for general-purpose application processing
