Big data includes complex and large data sets. These are challenging to process using typical applications or tools. Also, the deployment of big data is just as important as the capabilities big data can offer.
There are some big data-related options. Teradata (News - Alert) Portfolio for Hadoop supports businesses or other kinds of organizations trying to implement Hadoop “by taking the complexity and cost out of deploying and managing the solutions," Scott Gnau, president of Teradata Labs, said in a recent statement.
The Apache Hadoop project is a framework to distribute the processing of big data sets. It involves many clusters of computers, according to the project’s website.
In addition, Teradata collaborated with Hortonworks, which supports Apache Hadoop, on the portfolio.
"Teradata and Hortonworks have extended their strategic partnership to allow Teradata to resell and offer support for Hortonworks data platform," Rob Bearden, CEO of Hortonworks, said in a statement. "Working together, we are simplifying the deployment of Apache Hadoop and enabling customers to leverage all their data to create substantial business value.”
The Teradata Portfolio for Hadoop has two premium platforms. One is for the Teradata Appliance for Hadoop and the other is Teradata Aster Big Analytics Appliance.
The Teradata Appliance for Hadoop is optimized for enterprise-class data storage and management. It has Intel technology and a combines Mellanox (News - Alert) InfiniBand fabric-based hardware and Teradata BYNET V5 software.
On the other hand, the Teradata Aster Big Analytics Appliance combines the Teradata Aster Database, SQL-MapReduce and Apache Hadoop. It also has a combination of Mellanox InfiniBand fabric-based hardware and Teradata BYNET V5 software.
In addition, Teradata also powers the Teradata Commodity Offering for Hadoop and Teradata Software Only for Hadoop. In the Teradata Commodity Offering for Hadoop, Teradata partnered with Dell (News - Alert) and Hortonworks. It provides standard hardware, which has been configured for the Hortonworks data platform. It is economical, too.
It was also revealed that Teradata has more in store in the form of customer services and consulting services for big data.
Chris Twogood, director of product and services marketing at Teradata, said the new trend in technology answers the question, “How do we make it easy for companies to integrate Hadoop into their enterprise data architecture?"
Virtualization is changing how software for the enterprise is developed, deployed and maintained, UNICOM (News - Alert) Engineering added.
“At UNICOM Engineering, we believe virtualization will live up to its promise and deliver far greater flexibility, efficiency and scalability.”
“A virtual appliance streamlines the entire process by including the application and an optimized OS within the image,” the company adds. “And, as updates become necessary, they are delivered through a single patch dramatically reducing support costs.”
