Late in 2012, F5 Networks (News - Alert) and Riverbed Technology removed a barrier to enterprises adopting private cloud services by supporting virtual versions of their application delivery controller (ADC (News - Alert)) appliances on Amazon's Virtual Private Cloud (VPC), according to a report.
Customers of ADC providers want to see the Amazon cloud supported, said Lori MacVittie, F5's senior technical manager. "It's an environment customers are already familiar with, from a management standpoint. Many of their lab developments went to Amazon because it's easy," she said.
F5 said that with BIG-IP running in enterprise data centers and on AWS, customers can establish secure tunnels, gain access to the cloud, and control the application from end to end.
F5’s AWS uses the “bring your own license” (BYOL) model, which allows customers to buy perpetual licenses from F5 and then apply these licenses to instances running in AWS.
F5’s news in the latter parts of 2012 proves that the company is driving appliance deployment in the cloud. Their customers can use its BIG-IP platform to deploy network services in cloud-driven data centers that are built on Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V, a separate report notes.
The BIG-IP product suite is a system of application delivery services that work together on the same best-in-class hardware platform or software virtual instance. From load balancing and service offloading to acceleration and security, the BIG-IP system delivers agility for faster, more secure applications.
When it comes to appliance deployment in the cloud, more and more customers are looking to move services to the cloud to reduce their physical infrastructure and cost. Moving virtual appliances into the cloud requires new strategies for development, provisioning, maintaining, and updating virtual appliances.
Luckily, the F5 solution complements SDN by providing a strategic point of control for making application level decisions across the data, management, and control planes.
