For database security solutions on the enterprise level, Oracle’s (News - Alert) latest development promises to expand protection with Audit Vault and Database Firewall. The new offering provides network traffic monitoring that could circumvent any potential threats while simultaneously being able to audit operating systems. All of this will come in the form of appliance-based deployment to simplify operations.
Oracle's Database Firewall debuted in February of 2011 and was last updated in January of this year. The new product goes beyond being just a firewall, with the integration of audit capabilities. In fact, it makes it possible to consolidate and analyze non-database audit trails including operating systems (OS), file systems and directory audit logs.
"Oracle Audit Vault and Database Firewall is not just an integration of two existing products," said Vipin Samar, vice president of Database Security Product Development, Oracle. "This is a new product that provides a unified monitoring and auditing platform that goes beyond databases. Customers no longer have to choose between security and compliance -- they can now have a product that lets them achieve both more easily and at a lower cost."
The latest news from Oracle highlights a trend in the appliance deployment market. A recent independent research report commissioned by VMWare says that 36 percent of customers have virtualized x86 servers, and that number is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 24 percent.
76 percent of respondents added that they plan to deploy virtualized appliances over the next year with the newly installed x86 servers.
In case of hardware failure, appliance-based deployment can be easily moved to another piece of hardware. Virtual servers can be rebuilt within minutes, as opposed to physical servers, which can take up valuable resources and time to rebuild.
