Silver Peak Enhances Appliance Deployment Capabilities of Its Virtual WAN Optimization Solution

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

Silver Peak (News - Alert) Systems, a provider of data center class wide area network (WAN) optimization as a service, has expanded the appliance deployment capabilities of its virtual WAN optimization appliance, VRX8.

Silver Peak’s VRX-8 appliance is based on the Silver Peak Virtual Acceleration Open Architecture (VXOA), which facilitates WAN optimization appliance deployment in the most convenient, flexible and low-cost manner on a wide variety of industry standard hardware platforms and hypervisors.

Silver Peak VRX-8 now supports up to 256,000 simultaneous user sessions and runs on all of the most common hypervisor platforms. The appliance deployment solution supports 1 Gbps of WAN throughput, twenty times more than any other virtual WAN optimization product, the company said.

Further, the company claims that Silver PeakVRX-8 is the first and only virtual WAN optimization solution designed for all data center initiatives from replication between data centers to centralized file services for hundreds of remote locations.

"Silver Peak VRX virtual WAN optimization gives customers the most convenient and comprehensive options for deploying data center class WAN optimization on any form factor in the data center," said Larry Cormier, senior vice president of worldwide marketing for Silver Peak, in a statement. "Whether you require high-performance replication between data centers, or optimizing branch office fan-in to your data center, the VRX-8 is the perfect fit."

The VRX-8 can be used for data center-to-data center replication for disaster recovery and business continuity. It can also optimize branch office fan-in to data centers, application centralization, virtual desktop infrastructures (VDI) and cloud computing.

The platform support of the appliance deployment solution expands beyond VMware VSphere to include support for most common hypervisors such as Citrix XenServer and KVM, company officials said.

VRX-8 virtual appliance is application-, protocol- and software version-agnostic, allowing customers to optimize data center traffic including backup and recovery applications from leading vendors like EMC, Hitachi Data Systems, Dell (News - Alert), NetApp, HP, and IBM; TCP-based applications, such as Windows file sharing, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SharePoint, Lotus Notes/Domino, Siebel, SAP and Oracle.

The appliance deployment solution also supports non-TCP applications, such as EMC VPLEX Geo, Symantec (News - Alert) Veritas Volume  Replicator, Aspera and Brocade FCIP; interactive applications, like Virtual Desktop Infrastructures (VDI), Citrix XenApp, Sunray and Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP); and real-time applications, like voice-over-IP (VoIP), video conferencing, video streaming and other unified communications.
