Application Performance Management and Delivery Assurance Support in Sight for IBM DB2

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

ExtraHop Networks, a provider of network and application performance management (APM (News - Alert)) solutions, announced its support for IBM (News - Alert) DB2, an enterprise database system. With the addition of IBM DB2, the ExtraHop Application Delivery Assurance system supports seven enterprise databases, including open-source and premium database systems from vendors such as IBM, Oracle, Microsoft, Sybase, and PostgreSQL.

ExtraHop customers will also be able to monitor database transactions in real time without running invasive tools such as SQL profilers and agents, company officials said.

With the new solution, ExtraHop can now claim its support for the top three providers, IBM, Oracle (News - Alert), and Microsoft with the addition of IBM DB2. According to Gartner, an independent research agency, IBM, Oracle and Microsoft (News - Alert) accounted for more than 87 percent of revenues for the relational database market in 2009.

“Databases are at the nexus of today's modern infrastructure, and consequently, when application performance begins to slow, the database administrator usually gets the blame,” said Jesse Rothstein, CEO and co-founder of ExtraHop Networks, in a statement.

“The problem with most of the database-specific troubleshooting tools on the market today is that they consume too many system resources, rendering them largely ineffective for running in a live production system,” Rothstein added.

With ExtraHop system’s database administrator can pinpoint issues in a fraction of the time without worrying about bogging down the entire system, company officials said. Modern database systems have become complex due to constant interactions with application, network, and storage layers.

“Despite the volatile economy over the past couple years, we've seen the data warehouse database management system (DBMS) market continue to grow,” said Donald Feinberg, vice president of Gartner (News - Alert). “We believe the data warehouse DBMS market will continue to change in 2011 in order to fulfill the demand for high speed, lower latency, and large volumes of data brought about by new, high-value applications.”

Recently, ExtraHop Networks announced the launch of Network Timeout, a free Web service for sophisticated analysis of network packet captures. Network Timeout is powered by the ExtraHop Application Delivery Assurance system.
