Gomez, the application performance management division of Compuware (News - Alert) Corporation, announced that PETCO, a leading pet specialty retailer, has picked Gomez' Web performance management solution and industry benchmarks to optimize Web application performance.

The on-demand Gomez platform integrates Web load testing, Web performance management, Web cross-browser testing, and Web performance business analysis, enabling organizations to test from the "outside-in" – across all users, browsers, devices, geographies, and data centers – using a global network of over 150,000 locations, company officials said.

According to PETCO officials, each month PETCO.com gets hundreds of thousands of unique visitors exploring its 10,000 different pet-related items. The company was looking for a solution that can measure how its Web applications perform in comparison with its competitors.

PETCO began proactively monitoring its Web applications to ensure key Web pages and transactions perform properly – all the time, in all locations and across multiple browsers, company officials said.  

Gomez Benchmarks enabled PETCO to better understand the state of its Web application performance and measure performance changes over time as well as understand the risks of change for technology related investments by providing visibility into the performance impacts (positive or negative) of Web application changes, according to company officials.

“Continuously optimizing the speed and availability of our site is fundamental to PETCO's strategy in creating a fun and exciting online shopping experience and helping pet parents give their pets the quality of life they deserve,” said Katie Grisko, Web strategy manager at PETCO Animal Supplies, in a statement.

“Gomez' Web performance solutions and benchmarking capabilities play a vital role in helping us assess the impact of any infrastructure changes to end-users, and validating decisions and investments,” Grisko added.

Matt Poepsel, VP Performance Strategies, Gomez, reiterated that the ability to measure the performance of business-critical applications from the customer's perspective and compare it to industry benchmarks allows companies like PETCO to not only optimize the performance of these applications, but also evaluate how that performance stacks up against other online retailers and competitors.

“With actionable performance data, IT and business decision makers can baseline the performance of critical Web applications against investments made or planned,” Poepsel added.

Earlier in August TMCnet reported that Gomez expanded its U.S. retail banking Web and mobile performance benchmarks by including more metrics from more dimensions to provide a comprehensive and insightful view of Web and mobile performance.
