nCircle Addresses Complex Vulnerability Scanning Requirements with Newly Deployed Appliance

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

Security appliance deployment provider nCircle is now offering a next generation vulnerability scanning appliance designed to support complex vulnerability scanning requirements of the largest and most sensitive networks in the world.

Offered as part of the nCircle Suite360, the new Device Profiler 4000 (DP 4000) is capable of supporting advanced vulnerability scanning requirements including Web application and SCAP configuration scanning. The security appliance can efficiently scan even the largest network, offering the greatest vulnerability coverage in the industry, according to company officials.

Vulnerability scanning has quickly become an important and well-established security best practice. With over 5,000 network vulnerabilities being discovered every year, network scanning can become complex and time consuming. The increasing threat environment has also created a need for organizations to scan their networks more frequently than ever before.

The company also notes that majority of security threats (70 percent) arise from Web applications vulnerabilities. This scenario has created the need for creating scans that evaluate Web-specific vulnerabilities such as cross-site scripting, SQL injection and cross-site request forgery.

Though vulnerability scan requirements continue to escalate, many organizations are restricting scan traffic to limited time windows to preserve network performance and continuity.

Mike Rothman, president of Securosis, noted in a recent paper that traditional vulnerability scanners do not provide enough context to help organizations prioritize their efforts.

“Vulnerability scanners that meet today’s more advanced requirements have evolved from single purpose products into a multi-purpose strategic platform that includes configuration assessment, policy management, patch assessment and data integration with other security tools,” said Rothman.

The nCircle DP 4000 is touted as a hardened 1U rack-mountable scanning appliance that can discover and assess every IP address on a global network for over 70,000 security conditions. It scans all devices on the network, operating systems, all applications including Web applications, all open ports, all protocols, virtualized infrastructure, operating systems and application vulnerabilities and Web application vulnerabilities.

The DP 4000 has also been optimized to include SCAP configuration compliance scanning and vulnerability scanning in the same infrastructure, dramatically reducing the total cost of ownership. In addition to addressing these issues, the new DP 4000 doubles the scan speed of current hardware.
