2013 is the Year of Cloud-based Backup and Recovery Appliance Deployments

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

Zetta (News - Alert).net, a provider of backup, disaster recovery and archiving appliance deployment  solutions, has unveiled five predictions that will drive the online backup and recovery market in 2013.

The industry will see broader adoption of online backup in more sectors while there will be extinction of hardware-based backup appliance and deployment solutions. Online backup will also become more mainstream in SMBs, education and local government as it provides low-cost and hassle-free solutions to organizations.

Online backup is gaining popularity among these sectors mainly because of the growing concerns over security. Current security standards are exceeding what the majority of SMBs and distributed offices of large enterprises do in-house. Secure online server backup enables governments and schools to meet compliance requirements in a way that conventional storage solutions can’t.

Online server backupis now accessible and affordable to companies like never before. It costs only a fraction of the cost required for backup software, storage, support and offsite services – not including the time and resources spent managing multiple products and vendors.

The second trend predicted by Zetta.net is the popularity of the hybrid cloud. Hybrid backup 2.0 combines replicated data in the cloud with a "lean local" copy of large database files and offers capabilities like remote offsite backup that make appliance-based backup solutions look ancient. The purpose built backup appliances will gradually die out.

Next, it is forecasted that the high-performance enterprise online server backup space will continue to grow. Previously, enterprise online server backup adoption was hampered by bandwidth limitations; however, in 2013, cloud solutions will hit the main stage. This is spurred on by the result of so many SMBs and distributed enterprises increasing their bandwidth, the company said.

The fourth prediction is that integrated backup, disaster recovery and archiving make data protection achievable for SMBs. Emergence of technologies such as hybrid-cloud 2.0 has streamlined data protection into a single solution, leading to the mainstream adoption of integrated data protection among SMBs.

Last but not least, the firm is predicting that it believes large enterprises will increasingly take advantage of hybrid-online backup 2.0 for their distributed offices. Large enterprises with petabytes of data to backup and protect tend to build their own data centers to perform backups in-house. Adding the hardware and personnel required of a data center in each of these organizations is an expensive proposition yet with hybrid online backup will reduce the cost and complexity associated with backups all around.
