Astute Networks' Flash Storage Appliance Featured in Taneja Group Report

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

Astute Networks, a provider of performance storage appliance deployment solutions for virtual machines, recently revealed that its ViSX G4 Flash VM storage appliance has been recognized by analyst firm Taneja Group.

The ViSX G4 Flash VM storage appliance was highlighted in the Taneja Group report titled,  “Accelerating I/O-Intensive Virtualized Applications,” which outlines the I/O performance constraints faced in most virtual environments and explains how ViSX accelerates virtualized application performance, increases VM density, and dramatically ramps up the number of VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) users.

According to Taneja Group, central to the ready adoption of the Astute's ViSX VM storage appliances is that it integrates seamlessly into an existing virtual infrastructure. ViSX is a non-disruptive, high-performance flash solution that avoids forklift upgrades, ripping and replacing, or otherwise re-architecting production environments.

When deployed, these appliances deliver unprecedented random IOPS performance and  IOPS per dollar value, helping to unleash the full potential of virtualized data centers. They combine ultra-reliable eMLC Flash solid state storage modules with Astute's own custom designed, high-performance, 10/1GbE DataPump Engine network protocol processor that completely offloads and dramatically accelerates network (TCP) & storage (iSCSI) protocol processing.

While eliminating critical I/O bottlenecks that can affect virtualized applications, the ViSX appliance also supports integrated in-line de-duplication to significantly increase overall effective capacity. Unlike other traditional and flash storage systems, ViSX de-duplication technology has no impact on performance.

The Taneja Group report concludes that the ideal solution to minimize virtual infrastructure disruption is networked flash, the concept of enabling high-performance I/O for virtual environments by intelligently leveraging a shared flash appliance over common Ethernet iSCSI storage networks.

“We set out day one to fully leverage our patented technology into a family of purpose-built appliances that eliminate known problems and pain points experienced by a majority of organizations that have virtualized their infrastructure,” said Steve Topper, CEO of Astute Networks.  “Be it added performance for virtualized servers and applications, or removing the performance and cost obstacles holding back wide deployment of VDI, we are pleased that the Taneja Group report acknowledges that ViSX has succeeded in its intended purpose,” Topper concluded.
