Oracle Makes its Mark with Big Data Appliance Deployment

By Jamie Epstein, TMCnet Web Editor

As the appliance deployment industry continues to grow, Oracle (News - Alert) most recently added its Big Data Appliance to the fray.

The company first revealed that it would be releasing its Big Data Appliance back in October and will finally unveil the product in the very near future. Based on a foundation of vital software from Cloudera, a provider of Hadoop system management tools and support services, Oracle is showing that it’s more than ready to enter the appliance deployment arena.

"Cloudera brings us a couple of very important missing pieces, including its management software and assistance for a deeper second- and third-tier level of support," George Lumpkin, Oracle's vice president of product management, data warehousing, stated in a recent InformationWeek piece.

According to the article, Oracle through its infrastructure will provide a high level of support for the appliance, as well as all software such as Hadoop distribution and Cloudera Manager. In addition, the company will leverage Cloudera's expertise in certain scenarios, Lumpkin added.

With this innovative appliance, customers will be able to customize the software according to their individual needs. Lumpkin commented that Oracle expects many customers will select to use Hadoop only while others will run the NoSQL database, and still others may use both. Because Hadoop is a data processing platform that offers a high degree of both scalability and flexibility at a cost-effective price, customers will be drawn to this appliance right away.

"Oracle has put together a very comprehensive product that is priced very well," Kurt Dunn, Cloudera's chief operating officer, commented.

Going toe to toe with EMC’s (News - Alert) Data Computing Appliance, Oracle hopes that its appliance will pull ahead because of its capabilities.
