As Interest in VoIP Rises, MetaSwitch Gains No. 1 Position in Softswitch Licenses: Report

By Michael Dinan, TMCnet Editor

An Alameda, Calif.-based company today earned the top ranking among VoIP vendors worldwide for software that connects calls from one phone line to another in telecom networks, analysts say.

According to a new report from Infonetics Research (News - Alert), MetaSwitch earned the No. 1 position for Class 5 softswitch licenses sold during the first quarter of this year, with an 18.4 percent market share.

Diane Myers, a directing analyst at the firm and author of the report, titled “Service Provider VoIP Equipment and Subscribers Q1 2009,” said that her research confirms that MetaSwitch (News - Alert) plays a “significant role in the VoIP market, driven primarily by the leadership it has demonstrated with softswitch shipments in North America.”

“More than ever, carriers are looking closely at vendors’ financial stability and market leadership,” Myers said. “MetaSwitch is in a strong position on both fronts.”

The company long has led market share in North America in Class 5 softswitches, and in the first quarter of this year grew its share to 60.1 percent, according to Infonetics.

MetaSwitch’s ascent in the space dovetails with increased interest in VoIP as a communications standard, fueled in part by the down economy, which has more and more businesses looking to technology to cut costs.

As service providers look to reduce the operational costs of legacy networks, many are migrating to packet-based architectures, with IP session control, call feature servers and media gateways. MetaSwitch meets the need by offering core VoIP infrastructure and innovative IP Multimedia Subsystem (News - Alert) application solutions.

The company’s chief executive officer, John Lazar, said Infonetics’ new report “validates MetaSwitch’s commitment to providing value to the service provider market with a broad range of next gen switching, applications and IMS services, as well as our leadership role in the industry.

“The cornerstone of our success is continued investment in quality engineering, exceptional customer support, reliability and innovation,” Lazar said.
