MetaSwitch Solutions Helping Cable Operators in the Battle for Business Voice Services

By Tim Gray, TMCnet Web Editor

Carrier IP communications solutions company MetaSwitch (News - Alert) is having a breakout April with a slew of announcements and its upcoming sixth annual MetaSwitch Forum.

The Alameda, California-based MetaSwitch announced this week that Wave Broadband and Astound Broadband are now leveraging MetaSwitch's award-winning technology to deliver advanced telephony services to small and medium businesses.

The broadband deal with Wave and Astound will reach more than140, 000 basic video subscribers, according to the company. The two companies, which offer cable, Internet and phone services, have purchased and deployed MetaSwitch media gateways and feature server products to serve commercial subscribers in Western Washington State, Oregon and Northern California.

"MetaSwitch's robust, flexible solution allows us to support our existing customers while also delivering an ever expanding suite of differentiating new services," said Steve Friedman, chief operating officer, WaveDivision Holdings. "This flexibility was a deciding factor in our decision."

After years of working with its legacy Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert) switch, Astound Broadband made the move to MetaSwitch and successfully migrated over 17,000 San Francisco Bay Area subscribers to MetaSwitch.

The company says its next move is to deploy the MetaSphere application suite, including unified messaging and auto-attendant using a combination of HFC, fiber and copper for the last mile.

In addition to these two key business add-ons, current MetaSwitch customer Bresnan Communications announced it achieved key milestones with the introduction of more sophisticated commercial services, which has led to winning larger business customers.

Bresnan Communications is a big player in the video subscriber space with over 300,000 subscribers and has worked extensively with MetaSwitch to build its flexible, scalable next-generation switching and applications platform.

"Bresnan Communications has used the Metaswitch platform to expand and enhance services to businesses across our footprint,” said Don Helms, vice president at Bresnan Communications. “We use their technology to offer lucrative services like Hosted PBX (News - Alert) to our portfolio of large enterprise customers including hospitals and public school systems."

MetaSwitch supports Bresnan deployments of these expanded services with its platform and feature set, but their customer support and training has been everything we had expected as we continue to become the provider of choice for business across the Rockies.

“Using a phased approach to product introduction, Bresnan has been able to successfully transition from offering basic telephony services to delivering advanced services like Hosted PBX to business customers,” said Helms.

Bresnan has been expanded its business as of late, recently inking a deal with the Montana-based Billings Public Schools Trustee, which serves 15,500 students to provide an IP Hosted phone service to all Billings public schools.

"MetaSwitch continues to help power mid-tier MSOs with their entry into the business services market," said Mike Ward, senior vice president at MetaSwitch. "With MetaSwitch in place, these dynamic operators will be able to continue to offer compelling, revenue-generating services to business customers of all sizes, helping fuel expansion in the commercial segment. MetaSwitch services are a great fit for cable operators who are also the perfect target for broadband stimulus funding."

As TMCnet recently reported, MetaSwitch is gearing up for its sixth annual MetaSwitch Forum. The event takes place from April 6 to April 9, 2009 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

MetaSwitch Forum 2009 is designed to help companies develop a clear roadmap for competitive strategies to build upon and is expected to provide plenty of learning experiences attendees can bring home to their teams. As the California-based company is fond of saying, “What happens in Vegas definitely should NOT stay in Vegas!”
