BT Offers Advanced Carrier Services with Help from Metaswitch

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

BT (News - Alert), the incumbent U.K. telephone service provider, has leveraged Metaswitch technology to become one of the first major European operators to deliver emulated PSTN services over VoIP technology. These types of advanced carrier services are in high demand in a number of areas, as consumers and businesses alike are demanding high quality VoIP.

BT is offering advanced carrier services with its broadband voice service, targeted at U.K. cable operator customers, as well as BT’s own DSL subscribers. The broadband voice service is designed to offer low-cost national and international calling over any broadband Internet connection. BT’s Business Broadband Voice service is positioned as delivering the same VoIP technology to small businesses.

Based on the Metaswitch VP3500 Class 5 softswitch, the service is integrated with other components, as well as an Operational Support System offered by Metaswitch’s strategic partner, Fujitsu (News - Alert) Telecommunications Europe. Customers can register, manage profiles, credit their account and control their telephone features as advanced carrier services offerings within the bt.com website as part of the company’s self-care system.

The broadband voice switch from Metaswitch enables end-users to easily connect via a Broadband Telephone Adaptor and make use of an extensive range of UK PSTEN services over a broadband connection.

Advanced carrier services are in high demand for those providers hoping to make their mark on the industry. For the BT Broadband (News - Alert) Voice service, the company may be well positioned to drive dominance in this space. According to the International Herald Tribune, BT is the first incumbent phone company to launch a significant broadband voice service in the U.S. or Europe.

ZDNet noted that this is the first service to encourage users to send voice calls over the Internet as an aggressive move against rivals. And, as expected, the success of BT’s campaign will depend greatly on the technology deployed. When working with Metaswitch on advanced carrier services, only optimal quality service will be delivered.
