New Advanced Carrier Services Rumored to be Available with BlackBerry Platform

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

For those interested in advanced carrier services, Microsoft and RIM are rumored to be announcing a new, free hosted BlackBerry (News - Alert) Enterprise service, according to this recombu.com report. The news was first reported on the ZDNet website.

This new service is expected to be a business orientated version of Apple’s MobileMe cloud-based system and will use a combination of Microsoft (News - Alert) Exchange 2010 Online and BlackBerry Enterprise Services.

According to the ZDNet source, RIM is the only mobile operating system that does not use Microsoft ActiveSync-aware devices and instead has a separate device management platform, known as the BES environment.

When and if it becomes available, the new service would replace the current $10 per month Microsoft-hosted BES with a free system. Once in place, users would gain wireless access to various business functions such as tasks, contacts, calendars and e-mail.

No news yet on whether this new service will provide any added features or if current members will have to pay a fee to join.

In other advanced carrier services news, Metaswitch has added Thrutu to its complete suite of mobile applications, designed to enable operators to strike back against the threat of Over The Top (OTT) competition. Thrutu is a unique in-call content sharing application that is now available to service providers for the first time.

The Metaswitch mobile applications suite is positioned as adding the best of unified messaging and advanced call features for a subscriber’s existing mobile number. Such applications include granular call control, desktop application integration, mobile centrex, softphone-twinning and instant multi-party conferencing. Thrutu helps to promote longer call times by creating an environment for single-click, impulsive sharing that is seamlessly integrated with the call-in-progress screen.

"We know that operators want to extend the phone call, and earn a recurring revenue share of mobile applications, but to date most of those dollars are flowing to OTT providers," commented Kevin DeNuccio (News - Alert), CEO at Metaswitch Networks, in a statement. "With applications like Thrutu, we’re not only changing the conversation but changing the game. Service providers can leverage our products, service and real-world experience to quickly integrate branded OTT and network-based applications into their own competitive mix."

Metaswitch plans to demonstrate its new carrier capabilities at CTIA Wireless (News - Alert) 2011, showing carriers how to become "Upwardly Mobile" with its portfolio of wireless carrier solutions.

Interested parties can visit Metaswitch in Orlando this week at CTIA (Booth 5078).
