6WIND and Metaswitch Partner to Deliver Integrated Software for Advanced Carrier Services

By Stefanie Mosca, TMCnet Web Editor

6WIND and Metaswitch Networks have announced the integration of their best-in-class networking products to deliver their customers with a new software solution.

Together, 6WIND’s 6WINDGate packet processing software and Metaswitch’s MPLS, GMPLS, MPLS-TP and IP Routing control plane software will combine to offer integrated software for high performance networks.

The integration provides a compelling package for network equipment manufacturers looking for high-performance, high-quality networking protocols, proven compatibility and minimum time to market. Both solutions are leaders in their respective markets.

“We are delighted to be integrating our software with Metaswitch,” said Eric Carmès, CEO of 6WIND. “Our combined technologies provide a path for companies to deliver differentiated products and services faster and with less risk.”

The combined 6WIND and Metaswitch solution is particularly well suited for high-performance networking equipment based on multicore processor platforms, such as those from Cavium, Freescale, Intel (News - Alert) and NetLogic.

By dedicating several cores to the packet processing functions, with the remaining cores used for the higher level TCP/IP, Layer 2, PWE3, routing and MPLS components, systems can achieve performance normally associated with highly–specialized hardware at a fraction of the cost.

“6WIND’s multicore capabilities complement and enhance the multicore capabilities of our products,” said Clive Partridge, general manager of Metaswitch’s Network Technologies Division. "The combined product sets deliver unmatched performance on a wide range of multicore systems and significantly reduce the risk and cost of getting network equipment to market.”

In related TMC news, CounterPath (News - Alert) Corp., and Metaswitch Networks entered into a strategic, long-term agreement. The relationship includes the joint development and marketing of enhanced unified communications capabilities that extend voice, video and messaging services to desktop PCs and mobile devices.
