911 Services: TeleCommunication Systems in Pact with University of Maryland for Next-Gen 911 Applications

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

TeleCommunication Systems (News - Alert), a provider of mobile communication technology, and the Maryland Information and Network Dynamics (MIND) Lab at the University of Maryland, have announced their plans to build new public safety applications.

In their joint effort, both companies will harness technology innovation and academic expertise to explore Next Generation 911 National Emergency Number Association (NENA) i3-compliant technologies.

The company’s plans to build new public safety applications are expected to enhance emergency switching to Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs). The creation of public safety applications in an academic setting is expected to become one of the future standards for emergency services applications. The academic environment will also help ensure widespread commercial adoption.

“Applications such as texting to 911 and delivering images during a 911 call are in various phases of development throughout the country,” said Thomas Ginter, vice president of 9-1-1 product management for TCS, in a statement. “They represent just the beginning of the types of applications we can develop for NG911 based on the enormous advances being made in networking capability.”

Technology experts can develop innovative public safety applications at the MIND Lab. TCS will share its real-world experience in the current E911 environment and established expertise in the NENA i3 standards architecture. TeleCommunication Systems will have an advanced demonstration environment with a trained and creative staff for testing and evaluating applications.

“This collaboration offers the best of both worlds where a leading emergency communications company like TCS can leverage the creativity and innovations of highly trained academics, and a University lab like ours can get the benefits of the company's real-world experience,” said Ashok Agrawala, director of the MIND Lab.
