Less than Half of Americans Have an Emergency Response Plan: Time for a Reliable 911 Services Solution

By Beecher Tuttle, TMCnet Contributor

With the 10th anniversary of 9/11 quickly approaching, there is no better time to assess America's central concerns when it comes to emergency situations. In an effort to accomplish this goal, security solutions provider Federal Signal recently conducted a survey to determine our nation's attitude toward various catastrophes and our citizens' most likely responses to those situations.

The survey was conducted in partnership with the Safe America Foundation and was recently discussed at the organization's "9/11 Drill Down for Safety" briefing, which was attended by former United States Secretary of Transportation and honorary chairman, Norman Mineta.

Released in December, the 2010 American Public Safety Survey found that approximately 60 percent of respondents are most fearful of a natural disaster or a terrorist attack. The vast majority of those surveyed are anxious about these events occurring at an airport or in mass transit.

Possibly the most startling aspect of the survey is that only 46 percent of respondents indicated that they have an emergency plan or 911 services solution in place. Of this group, just over 60 percent feel that they have an adequate knowledge of their area's specific emergency and 911 services procedures.

Furthermore, more than half of those who took part in the poll said that they have yet to prepare an emergency kit. A whopping 49 percent said that they are not sure if their town has a method of alerting them or providing a 911 services solution in case of an emergency or natural disaster.

"We need more emphasis put on the importance of emergency preparedness," Secretary Mineta said. "By doing so, more Americans will feel confident in their abilities to react to an emergency."

When asked about their preferred method of emergency notification, the majority of respondents indicated that a telephone call or television message was would work best. About 18 percent said that they would prefer to receive a text message.

The results of the survey obviously suggest that Americans are not as prepared for emergency situations as authorities would prefer. 911 services, such as those supplied by 911 Enable, can help individuals, companies and schools calm fears about certain emergencies by keeping people connected.

E911 solutions provide organizations with the ability to track the location of an emergency call and route it to the appropriate public safety answering point, whether it is coming from an organization's headquarters, a branch office or from a remote location.
