In-Stat Projects Rapid Adoption of SuperSpeed USB into Digital Cameras, Camcorders

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributor

The desirability of SuperSpeed USB is becoming more apparent as picture file sizes increase with camera resolution, and as camcorders move from standard-definition (SD) to high-definition (HD), according to a research report published by In-Stat.

The research, “USB 2010: SuperSpeed USB Adoption Will Lag the Pace of High-Speed USB Adoption,” covers the worldwide market for USB technology.

In-Stat (News - Alert) says that USB has been successful in the digital still camera and digital camcorder markets since most users want to download images to PCs to store video recordings and still pictures or to print pictures.

The adoption of SuperSpeed USB into digital cameras and camcorders expected to happen much more rapidly unlike other CE device segments. The report forecasts that the penetration levels will reach 50 percent and 60 percent respectively, by 2014.

“SuperSpeed USB can move 25GB of data in 70 seconds, the same amount of data would take nearly 14 minutes using high-speed USB,” said Brian O’Rourke, principal analyst at In-Stat.

O’Rourke said that this “dramatic leap” in download times makes the adoption of SuperSpeed USB into digital camcorders and cameras a natural migration. “We expect to see the first SuperSpeed USB camcorders hit the market in the second half of 2011.”

Additionally, according to the findings of In-Stat research, around 160 million digital TVs will ship with USB in 2014; by 2014 nearly 7 million set top boxes will be have integrated SuperSpeed USB.

The research report also projects that SuperSpeed USB will reach 40 percent penetration in the portable digital media player market in five years, and 225 million SuperSpeed USB flash drives will ship in 2014, representing a CAGR of 791.8 percent from 2009 to 2014.

Earlier this month, In-Stat reported that the total in-flight broadband equipment investment is set to touch half a billion dollars globally by 2013.
