Eye-Fi Pro X2: Much Improved, and Still More Than SD Storage

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

If you’re into “little gizmos” for shutterbugs, check out the Eye-Fi card.

As industry observer Christopher Null writes, “the Eye-Fi looks like any old SD storage card, but in reality it's much, much more.” He describes it as “a tiny wireless radio inside your camera,” letting you do without the hassles of the cord or from having to take the card out and put it into your PC.

The Eye-Fi’s been around for a while. It lets you upload your photos to your computer automatically and wirelessly “whenever you snap them,” Null says: “If you want, it will also send them to Flickr, Facebook (News - Alert), or just about anywhere else.”

Now the Eye-Fi Pro X2 is hitting the market, what Null describes as “the third major revision of the Eye-Fi hardware,” and “its biggest update yet.” He took it for a test drive and gives a quick rundown of some of the features and how well they actually work in real life:

“Updating the radio to 802.11n makes uploads to your PC much faster than ever.” Evidently, from what Null says, in the past users had problems with the camera shutting off before a single photo got uploaded: “Now uploads are positively zippy, with next to no waiting.”

It has 8 GBs of storage, so no more worrying about switching to lower resolutions to save space. And the manufacturer’s also added support for video uploads in the last version of the card, Null says, adding that “now it supports RAW files as well, if your camera supports them.”

Other features give you more flexibility with your Eye-Fi card, Null notes: "Endless Memory automatically deletes shots once they are confirmed uploaded to your computer, and Selective Transfer lets you control which photos are uploaded instead of just grabbing everything on the card.

His final word? “It's the blazing speed of the X2 that really makes it the best Eye-Fi product yet. $150 for the 8GB card.
