Minnesota's New Appliance Rebate Program Complements Xcel Energy's Recycling Program

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor

The state of Minnesota will start offering a new appliance rebate program next month. The program complements Xcel Energy’s new Refrigerator Recycling Program. Thus, Xcel customers with old, secondary refrigerators have two recycling options and both of them involve cash incentives.

The appliance rebate program from the state of Minnesota offers a $200 rebate on ENERGY STAR (News - Alert) qualifying refrigerators. In order to receive the state’s rebate, old refrigerators have to be properly recycled. On the other hand, Xcel Energy’s new Refrigerator Recycling Program, offers free pick up of old, operational refrigerators, a Proof of Recycling Certificate and a $35 rebate. This program also requires proper recycling of the appliance and makes the resident automatically eligible for the state’s program.

The Refrigerator Recycling Program from Xcel Energy is administered through Appliance Recycling Centers of America. ARCA is one of the largest recyclers of major household appliances for the energy conservation programs of electric utilities in the United States.

According to Kelsey Burich, program manager at Xcel Energy, the program aims to improve energy efficiency in Xcel Energy’s service territory and make it easy for customers to get rid of their old appliances. The Xcel Energy’s Refrigerator Recycling Program helps to destroy and recycle more than 95 percent of the appliance, thereby keeping it out of a landfill. The $35 recycling incentive will be mailed automatically to the customer within three to four weeks after pick up.

The Refrigerator Recycling program is scheduled to run until Dec. 31, 2010. Only those residential electric customers of Xcel Energy living in Minnesota who have a valid account number with Xcel Energy will be able to participate in the program. The program will recycle only one refrigerator per year for a customer. In addition, for a refrigerator to be recycled, it is necessary to be owned by the customer himself.

A major U.S. electricity and natural gas company, Xcel Energy provides a comprehensive portfolio of energy-related products and services to 3.4 million electricity customers and 1.9 million natural gas customers through its regulated operating companies. Xcel Energy is committed to customer satisfaction by continuously improving its operations to be a low-cost, reliable, environmentally sound energy provider.
