RecycleBank, eBay Reward Consumers for Recycling, Reusing Products

By Anamika Singh, TMCnet Contributor

RecycleBank, the country’s recycling rewards and loyalty program, is reportedly partnering with eBay, an online marketplace, to reward consumers for recycling and reusing products. Today’s more environmentally-conscious consumers now have an innovative loyalty program that rewards them for being green.

RecycleBank rewards people for going green, like the recycling of trash and electronics. The model has been a success and has been around for five years now. On average, recycling volumes increase two-to-five times and members across the country earn hundreds of dollars in reward value. RecycleBank has more than 1 million consumers across the world.

The new eBay (News - Alert) collaboration takes the RecycleBank program offers users 50 RecycleBank Points for joining eBay’s Green Team community. The Green Team encourages consumers to reuse what exists in the world today. RecycleBank members will soon be able to use their RecycleBank Points for discounts on eBay purchases.

“Our relationship extends the power of eBay and the eBay Green Team to reward the greener actions that more and more consumers are taking every day,” Amy Skoczlas Cole, director of the eBay Green Team said. “Thousands of eBay sellers have built successful businesses by recycling, re-using and re-selling products that already exist and may otherwise have ended up in landfills. Our relationship with RecycleBank offers an innovative way to encourage and reward green-conscious consumers who are looking for more sustainable ways to shop.”

EBay commissioned proprietary research in early 2009 measured the carbon savings of specific items available on eBay.com and finds that choosing a new-to-you blender saves 95 percent of the CO2 needed to produce a new one. Also, selecting a refurbished smart phone saves the energy equivalent of driving 186 miles. The research shows that choosing a classic, previously owned watch saves the energy equivalent of 39 days of refrigerator use.

“RecycleBank has always been rewarding more responsible environmental behavior like recycling for households across America,” Morley Ivers, chief rewards officer at RecycleBank, said “Working with eBay on an initiative to promote reuse and rewarding consumers for that behavior becomes a natural progression of our business,” added “Together, we look forward to amassing a movement of people committed to reusing and recycling.”
