By Marisa Torrieri, TMCnet Editor

If you had a hunch that video is the new killer app, Cisco might’ve just confirmed it this week at the Las Vegas 2010 CES (News - Alert) show.

On Wednesday the networking and now-established consumer video provider revealed plans to test of a home video conferencing service in the spring. This is the first extension of Cisco’s (News - Alert) video conferencing services to the home. Called “home telepresence,” the consumer video service uses existing HDTV and broadband connection to deliver a unique, natural video communication experience from the comfort of the living room.

This spring, Cisco will reportedly partner with Verizon (News - Alert) for the field trials in the United States, and with France Telecom in late 2010.

At CES, Cisco CEO John Chambers gave a demo of the home-based video conferencing system in progress. He used the home video system to talk with his wife, connect to a doctor and search for and connect with a potential tutor via a virtual “Marketplace,” according to reports.

Market research firm IDC (News - Alert) forecasts that in 2010 there will be 32 million U.S. households with the required broadband connection to support a high-quality home telepresence communication experience.

“Video is rapidly expanding from a lean-back experience confined to the living room, to a new breed of exciting video experiences available on any device or screen – anytime, anywhere,” said Ned Hooper, chief strategy officer and senior vice president, Consumer Business, Cisco. “The network is the platform to make this happen, and as a result, we are enabling new experiences that allow consumers to easily capture and share their lives and connect with the people and content that matter most to them.”

To find out more about Cisco, visit the company at the 4GWE Conference. To be held Jan. 20 to 22 in Miami and collocated with ITEXPO East 2010, the 4GWE Conference will focus on the realities of deploying 4G technologies and delivering broadband wireless applications to a growing community of wireless broadband consumers.
