Sony’s Playstation has brought hours of fun and joy to millions of users worldwide. Now, the gaming console may also turn into a useful Voice over Internet Protocol device as well.
According to a number of online reports, Sony has struck a deal with UK telecom giant BT to offer video-based VoIP communications on the Playstation console. Under the terms of a four-year contract, both companies will develop a host of additional features for the Playstation, including voice.
Sony Playstation users will reportedly be able to download a special BT softphone onto their consoles. Once downloaded, they can then make wireless voice calls to landline phones, PCs, and mobile phones. Subscribers can use the service over a home or office wireless network, free hotspot, or BT Openzone wireless access point, say reports.
BT and Sony will reportedly initiate the service in the UK later this year, and then extend it to over 100 countries across Europe, Middle East and Africa.
