Apple (News - Alert) has filed a patent application that indicates the company may incorporate a touch screen on devices besides the iPhone, slated to ship next month, according to an online report in industry publication InformationWeek.
The patent application filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office shows blueprints for mounting a touch-sensitive screen on the backside of a device, leaving the front side free for video functions, the report said.
According to the patent application, a cursor on the touch screen would follow a person's finger. Once above a control element, the user could apply pressure on the cursor to activate the associated function.
In response to the filing, tech bloggers now speculate Apple may incorporate a touch screen on its popular iPod – something the computer maker reportedly declined to comment on.
So far, Apple has only announced plan for a touch screen on it iPhone. But the patent application mentions a number of devices where Apple could use the backside touch screen, including handheld computer systems, tablet computer systems, personal digital assistants, portable video or audio playback systems, and mobile telephones, the report said.
