Oman Telecom Reducing Expands Network Through Alliances

By Narayan Bhat, TMCnet Contributing Editor

If you are businessman and a globe trotter, you obviously subscribe to a cell phone company that charges, at the very least, a minimum fare for roaming.  The growing mobile industry offers a wide array of service and hardware offerings, and many have invested heavily in technology in hopes of organically growing their subscriber bases. Others, however, seek to grow by way of cross-vendor alliances.

One of those carriers that that has been feverishly cobbling together alliances with a verity of cell phone operators across the globe, Oman Mobile Telecommunications (OMT) Company, has now facilitated free international multimedia messaging service to its 1.3 million customers. Indeed, OMT’s effort may be a method worth emulating for mobile operators across the globe, as high roaming costs prompt subscribers to continually switch to carriers offering lower rates.

Today, OMT has signed service agreements with 136 countries and 314 service operators around the world, many of them in Muslim nations. As a result, subscriber to Oman Mobile can exchange international multimedia messages free of cost and without any additional monthly subscription fee.  Of course, the roaming service is just one of the 40 diversified services provided by Oman Mobile to its 1.3 million customers.

The string of agreements have made the Oman Mobile the provider of widest mobile service in the whole of Sultanate, and allowed its customers remain connected to the network even when traveling overseas. The company says its vision is to enhance services to its customers, widen roaming coverage to even more international destinations, thus enabling every single Oman Mobile user to roam without any restrictions.

Engineer Suleiman Al Yahyai, section head of international roaming, said, “International roaming is highlighted as one of the more significant services Oman Mobile offers, especially with the addition of international MMS.  We in Oman Mobile are proud that we have covered over 95 percent of the populated area in the Sultanate.”

Pakistan’s Telenor is the latest operator to join the ever growing list of cell phone operators that Oman Mobile is tying a knot with. Oman Mobile customers can now exchange photographs and other multimedia elements with their friends around the world. In addition to Telenor, Oman Mobile has signed deals with Batelco in Bahrain; Vodafone in Egypt; Mobily and Al Jawwal in Saudi Arabia; Maxis in Malaysia; Orascom in Tunisia and Algeria; Eitsalat, Q-Tel, and MTC Vodafone in Kuwait; and Smart in Philippines. The idea is to expand its roaming coverage not through its own technology, but through alliances with other mobile operator.
