By Pradip Bhatacharya, TMCnet Contributing Editor

mig33, the global mobile Internet community, has announced its parent company, Project Goth, has closed a Series A funding round of $10 million co-led by Accel Partners and Redpoint Ventures, with substantial contribution from Technology Venture Partners. The company sought the capital to expand its mobile phone-based global communications service, according to a statement.

The company says it opening popular Internet services up to all mobile phone users. Based on its rapidly expanding user base — it is already serving subscribers in more than 200countries since launching in beta in December 2005, with some 4 million users sending 15 million messages each day.  Indeed, mig33 if off to a fast start in a category that technology companies, industry experts, and financial analysts believe will be among the fastest growing in the next decade, added the press release.

mig33 says it is the first global mobile community bringing the power of the Internet and community together for anyone with a mobile phone by offering the benefits of inexpensive mobile VoIP calls, instant messaging, text messaging, and social networking and community features, that let users share content while chatting in forums or specific chat rooms they create and share with friends. Depending on the country being called, mig33 says users can save up to 95% on their international calls and roaming costs.

Steve Goh, CEO and co-founder of Project Goth said, “For most of the world, the mobile phone is already the primary device for connecting to the Internet, and this trend is growing in the United States.  He also pointed out that, “Our mobile platform lets anyone get online from just about anywhere they are and immediately begin communicating and sharing with the community.  With five billion worldwide residents still waiting to access the Internet, we expect to be a primary window to the Web.”

mig33 is an easy-to-use application that works on most mobile phones, even basic models, regardless of carrier, and creates an instant global mobile community experience to share with existing and new friends.

mig33 will launch in the U.S. and additional countries in the coming months.

“There is a race on around the world to establish a mobile platform that can be the gateway to the Internet for billions of consumers,” said Kevin Efrusy of Accel Partners. “We believe mig33 is well down the path of becoming a leader in this global race to bring the Internet to most of the world.”
