Report: Small/Medium TFT LCDs to Change Next Year

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributor

DisplaySearch has reportedly predicted that small/medium TFT LCDs are set to experience dramatic changes over the next year.

The market research and consulting firm has released the 2009 edition of its Annual Small/Medium TFT LCD and AMOLED Product Roadmap Report. This unique offering provides an analysis of the roadmaps for small/medium TFT LCD and AMOLED display products and technologies by applications.

Hiroshi Hayase, director of small/medium displays research, said that the changes in small/medium TFT LCDs will be driven by market demand and the shift of larger fabs to production of small-medium panels.

According to the report, most AMOLED display developers are focused on mobile phones as their initial application. However, they intend to move into notebook and TV panels in the future.

DisplaySearch has also highlighted certain applications in the report including mobile phone, digital still camera, digital photo frame, portable navigation device, automobile and mobile Internet device.

Mobile Phones: The popular sizes are in the range of 1.8 - 2.4", but 3.0"+ is increasing its footprint. The research firm has identified smart phones as the growth driver in screen size, development of new technologies and reduced power consumption for multimedia usage.

Digital Still Cameras: Sizes of these products range from 2.4" to 3.5", and production is mainly in Gen 2 through Gen 3.5 fabs. Gen 4 production is coming, says the report.

Digital Photo Frames: The market is dominated by InnoLux, CPT and HannStar with sizes ranging between 5.6" and 10.2". Research shows that production is moving to Gen 5, and LED backlighting for lower power consumption is increasing. Also, new drivers ICs are being adopted for lower cost. LG Display is working on mirror functionality, an innovative technology for digital photo frames.

Portable Navigation Device: The market is dominated by Samsung (News - Alert), Sharp and AUO. Display formats are shifting to WVGA and WQVGA and new technologies are being adopted. Sizes range between 3.5 inches and 7 inches.

Automobile: According to DisplaySearch, the mainstream size range is 7 inches to 10 inches. An increase in the integration of LED backlight and touch panel has been observed. Round panels, designed to fit with other dashboard gauges are also becoming popular.

Mobile Internet Device: Manufacturers are focusing on LED backlight and WVGA and WSVGA resolution.
