Apple Delays Launch of Apple TV to Mid March

By Rahul Prabhakar, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Recently, Apple (News - Alert) premiered one of its most anticipated products, Apple TV, an easy to use interactive device that wirelessly plays all your favorite iTunes content from Mac or other PC's on a widescreen television set. It not only plays movies, television shows, music or photos, but also podcasts. The new interface lets the user browse through quickly and view the entire collection of digital media from across the room using Apple Remote. The device connects to most modern widescreen televisions.

Steve Jobs (News - Alert), the CEO of Apple commented “Apple TV is like a DVD player for the 21st century—you connect it to your entertainment system just like a DVD player, but it plays digital content you get from the Internet rather than DVDs you get from a physical store.”  “Apple TV plays the same iTunes content that users enjoy on their computers and iPods, so now they can even watch part of a movie in their living room, and watch the rest later on their iPod.”

Apple had earlier made a public announcement about the product, reasonably priced at a suggested retail price of US $299, stating it would hit the Apple Store (www.apple.com), Apple’s retail stores, and Apple Authorized Resellers in February of this year. However, the latest news from the company makes it clear that it has no plans of shipping it until the middle of March. Apple agreed on the delay, but did not quote a specific reason why they postponed the launch.

The product made its first appearance as iTV in September last year. Later in January, at the Macworld Expo, Apple formally announced that this device is a set-top box that allows users to play television shows and movies downloaded to a Mac or PC on a widescreen television in another room.

The Cupertino, California-based company said in a press release, “Wrapping up Apple TV is taking a few weeks longer than we projected and we now expect to begin shipment mid-March.”

The Apple TV highlights the latest effort from Apple to demonstrate its core strengths into the digital living room, which now remains to be seen with the launch of this next generation product.
