NVIDIA Debuts New Mobile HD Platform

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributing Editor

NVIDIA has designed and developed a new mobile platform that can enable a cheap, low powered, always on, always connected HD mobile internet device (MID).

NVIDIA (News - Alert) officials have stated that the new platform is based on NVIDIA’s Tegra 600 Series computer-on-a-chip and can offer users an always connected multimedia device for their social media apps and also a high end HD player.

NVIDIA deals in visual computing technologies and the inventor of the GPU, a high-performance processor which generates interactive graphics on workstations, personal computers, game consoles, and mobile devices.

"Mobile internet devices have evolved to provide consumers with the performance and connectivity required by today's lifestyle," said Michael Rayfield, general manager of the mobile business unit at NVIDIA. "Until now, consumers could get just another 'gadget' with limited functionality or a PC that's not 'always on'. A Tegra-based platform combines the best of both worlds."

The platform features Tegra paired with nVidia chipset and graphics technology. Tegra is a system-on-a-chip featuring an ARM (News - Alert) 11 core and nVidia's graphics permitting 1080p HD television decode and OpenGL ES 2.0 3D graphics. The company claims that this new MID has huge battery life (up to 130 hours audio/30 hours HD video) and enough graphics power to render Quake3 anti-aliased at 40FPS.

NVIDIA has added that tegra processors with ARM architecture can be used to build notebooks and internet-devices for prices as low as $199. Platforms based on tegra are also capable of playing fullHD (1080p) videos and can run without recharging for days. This new device would cost consumers no more than $99.

The support of a standard 3G wireless network will be in the u335 device from ST- Ericsson (News - Alert). NVIDIA also added about the support of tegra APX 2600 processors to the platforms program android, which allows creating cell phones with advanced functional possibilities.

Company officials state that the Tegra MID delivers: 720p and 1080p video playback; Days of use between charges; Full Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity; Optimized hardware support for Web 2.0 applications for a true desktop-class internet experience; and a complete software solution including Microsoft (News - Alert) Windows Embedded CE OS, application viewers, full Internet browser, UI framework, board support package (BSP), software development kit (SDK), Web mail client, and more.
