OtterBox Defender Case Safeguards BlackBerry Bold

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributing Editor

The BlackBerry (News - Alert) Bold smartphone from Research in Motion (RIM) is being safeguarded by OtterBox 1937 Defender Series case. This new case is semi-rugged and drop and scratch-safe. Otter Products, LLC designs and produces rugged and semi-rugged cases to safeguard technology.

According to Curt Richardson, CEO of Otter Products, “The Defender Series line protects devices from everyday bumps and drops while still allowing complete user interaction. BlackBerry Bold users are frequently on-the-go and the OtterBox provides technology protection for a variety of lifestyles.”

The new OtterBox 1937 Defender Series case has acoustical vents on speakerphone, headset speaker and microphone, which enable clear sound transmission. A silicone plug allows access to sync/charge jack. A holster-style swivel clip has been included for conveniently carrying the device. The trackball, camera and flash are functional even when the case covers the device. This slim, sleek and stylish case is available in black and is priced at $49.95. The different layers of protection provided by OtterBox 1937 Defender Series case are:

Layer 1: safeguards from dust, dirt and scratches. Optional thermal formed protective clear membrane for keypad and screen. Scratch resistant lens to protect the camera.
Layer 2: a high-impact polycarbonate shell snaps together over the device
Layer 3: a silicon skin to absorb bump and shock to be wrapped over the device

Drop and shock protection is provided up to 36" to plywood on concrete. Regarding dust intrusion, protection is provided against objects greater than 1mm. Since the OtterBox case is not fully protected against water, it’s not intended for protecting against damage caused by water. The case dimensions are 4.84" x 2.93" x 0.96."

Hector Serna, communications administrator, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, stated, “When comparing other wireless enclosures, nothing I have found in the market compares to OtterBox. With the OtterBox cases deployed to our sales force, the largest wireless users in our company, we estimate saving 18 percent annually on replacement units.” OtterBox will be releasing a new line named Impact Series for those requiring less extreme protection in the near future.
