Sony's Ultra-Thin LCD HDTV to Hit Japan Market in November

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Sony reportedly will release the world’s thinnest LCD high-definition TV (HDTV) in Japan on November 10.

KDL-40ZX is just 9.9-mm (0.39 inch) thick. It weighs 12.2kg (26 pounds) and has got a 40-inch screen. World’s thinnest LCD TV, currently available from Hitachi (News - Alert), is 0.74-inch thick, almost of double thickness than KDL-40ZX. Sony is also preparing a 0.35-thick plasma TV, but the release date has not been set.

The ultra-thin LCD HDTV includes a handful of high-end television technologies from Sony. The LCD screen of KDL-40ZX has got light emitting diode (LED) backlighting and screen contrast ratio of 3,000:1. LEDs emit vibrant colors to the screen, producing higher contrast and sharpness to the pictures.

The KDL-40ZX comes with a wireless HD base station based on the latest high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) standard for playing video from set-top boxes, DVD players, computers, and other devices. It supports 3 HDMI, 2 components, an S-Video, and a VGA input. Additionally, it supports AV mouse, USB, local area network (LAN) and even standard phone port. The USB port allows you to see pictures from a thumb drive or digital camera.

There is a concern that the TV will only transmit video wirelessly at 1080i.  Sony reportedly will release a wired model, which may include one HDMI port.

Sony’s KDL-40ZX supports the X.V. Color standard, which allows a TV to show all the colors the eye can see, estimated as high as 10 million. This color standard is supported by camcorders today; but in the near future, Blu-ray movies are expected to be coded in this format.

Sony has incorporated its 120-HzMotionFlow technology for providing high quality video to the new gadget. This technology doubles the 60-frames-per-second rate of broadcast and cable TV, resulting in high-quality videos without blurring of action sequences for videos of events like sports.

KDL-40ZX is provided with Sony’s Bravia Engine 2 image processing technology that boosts standard images, whether from a cable connection or DVD player, to high-definition 1080p quality.

Sony KDL-40ZX will be available in different shades as well.

Sony has not announced the price of KDL-40ZX1. According to Engadget, the TV could cost around 490,000 yen ($4,474).
