Palm Launches Treo 680 Smartphone

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Associate Editor

Smartphone manufacturer Palm today announced availability of its latest product, the Treo 680. The all-in-one mobile phone—priced at $399—now can be preordered now through Palm.com, and will be in stores after December 1.

Treo 680, which runs the Palm OS, features an internal antenna, slim form factor (smaller than other U.S. available devices in the product line), and comes in four colors: Arctic, Copper, Crimson, and Graphite.
Palm said in its announcement that the new smartphone comes packed with features such as e-mail, Web browsing, messaging, multimedia, calendar, and contacts. It’s also one of the first phones to support streaming Flash-based movies, using the newly released Kinoma Media Player 4EX.

For the launch of Treo 680, Palm is running a promotion that gives users access to a music bundle from Yahoo!, including a free 30-day trial to Yahoo! Music Unlimited and Yahoo! Music for Mobile.

John Hartnett, Senior Vice President of Palm’s Global Markets division, said he expects the Treo 680 will expand the company’s smartphone market reach into new geographic and demographic areas.

“The Treo 680 smartphone will attract new users in the smartphone and feature-phone markets through affordability, ease of use and style,” Hartnett said in a statement.

In conjunction with the launch of Treo 680, Palm is offering a variety of smartphone accessories, including a wireless headset ($129), leather holster case ($29.99), replacement battery ($49.99), vehicle power charger ($29.99), and antiglare screen protectors ($29.99).

A number of service providers already have jumped on board the Treo 680 wagon, offering free trials or details about their services that ship with the new smartphone. These include:
  • TeleNav GPS Navigation Service – Now available on Treo 680 for $9.99 per month.
  • Handmark Pocket Express News and Information Service – Two week trial ships with Treo 680; after trial, $6.99 per months provides access to news, sports and weather info.
  • AudibleListener Membership – Free trial of spoken entertainment, information and education service ships with Treo 680; also included is Audible software on installation CD.
  • Good Technology (News - Alert) Mobile Messaging – Now available for Treo 680.
Wireless service for Treo 680 is provided by Cingular (News - Alert).
