Sony Releases VAIO Z Series Notebooks

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Sony has released a new line of powerful, lightweight PCs – the VAIO Z Series notebooks. The VAIO Z model, weighing more than 3 pounds, incorporates a 13.1-inch widescreen display with ZBRITE-DuraView LCD technology.

According to Mike Abary, senior vice president of VAIO product marketing at Sony Electronics, “Today’s mobile professional demands not only portability from a notebook, but that it meets their productivity needs as well. This new model is an amazing engineering feat packing the full functionality of a larger PC into an ultra-light form factor.”

A high resolution 1600x900 widescreen display is a feature of select models. This provides a 40 percent wider workspace than a standard display within the same “footprint,” which makes it easier to view multiple documents or lengthy spreadsheets on a single screen. The individual keys of the keyboard panel have a seamless sheet of brushed aluminum. The correct spacing between the keys provides a comfortable typing experience while helping to prevent mistakes.

VAIO Z model is powered by Intel (News - Alert) Centrino 2 technology, the chipset that is designed for high performance and system responsiveness. The unit is placed in a durable carbon-fiber casing to endure knocks, bumps and accidents. The G-Sensor Shock Protection technology is also incorporated to counteract sudden movements and thus helps prevent damage and data loss.

The model has built-in 802.11n wireless LAN capabilities that make it easier to connect to compatible wireless networks. The unit also features optional built-in wireless Sprint (News - Alert) Mobile Broadband for fast wireless access beyond networks and hotspots.

Ability to create and store high-definition content is facilitated through the optional Blue-ray Disc optical drive. It also contains a switch-on-the-fly hybrid graphics system that allows the user to set graphics performance instantly. The PC has a biometric fingerprint sensor, which is a Trusted Platform Module compliant chip and proprietary hard disk drive password protection software to help protect data from unauthorized access.

The trial version of the My Memory Center service present in the model helps you to transfer data from your old computer to your new one via a password protected online account. The PC is available in a dual channel 128 GB solid state drive model as well.
