CSR's BlueCore5-Multimedia Technology Used in i.Tech Bluetooth Headset

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributing Editor

CSR (News - Alert) announced that its BlueCore5-Multimedia silicon technology is being used by i.Tech Dynamic in that company’s Clip D-Radio Bluetooth headset. The headset supports v2.1+EDR of the Bluetooth specification and provides wireless streaming of high quality audio from the handset, music player or from the in-built FM radio.

The new Bluetooth v2.1 specification includes features like simplified pairing procedure for connecting the headset to a handset or MP3 player making it easier to use. The i.Tech Clip D-Radio makes use of CSR’s BlueCore5-Multimedia with integrated digital signal processor (DSP). This offers flexible architecture and Clear Voice Capture (CVC) technology required for better echo and noise suppression.

CSR’s multimedia BlueCore Bluetooth integrated circuits (ICs) include a built-in DSP.  The technology was designed to provide optimum audio performance for stereo headsets, using the 95dB SNR codec. The DSP architecture used is flexible and allows designers to add features to improve performance and functionality like the provision of FM radio in i.tech’s Clip D-Radio.

i.Tech's Clip D-Radio Bluetooth HeadsetThe BlueCore5-Multimedia radio transmits at +8dBm and receives at -90dBm thereby avoiding any interference. Along with CSR’s proprietary CVC technology for providing better audio quality the Clip D-Radio will provide crystal clear sound even if there is noise in the background.

The Bluetooth technology from CSR enabled i.Tech to come out with a small headset weighing just 21.5 grams. The organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display allows users to see who is calling and to browse between FM radio stations. It displays missed calls, battery and pairing status updates, and dial-out functions for storing 10 numbers and four radio stations. It features a buzzer alert mode so that users can differentiate between calls. It can be recharged using a PC USB port.

CSR’s BlueCore5-Multimedia technology offers Clip D-radio enhanced data rate (EDR) for lower power consumption. i.Tech has seven hours of audio streaming time or 150 hrs on standby for radio headset. The headset is compatible with A2DP and AVRCP profiles to enable connectivity to several music sources and the ability to switch between phone calls and stereo music.

“Audio quality and battery life have always been the most important features of a Bluetooth headset,” said Anthony Murray, senior vice president of CSR’s wireless audio strategic business unit, in a statement. “i.Tech’s Clip D-Radio is a stylish compact design that combines both entertainment and communication in a singular package. Combined with our BlueCore5-Multimedia the Clip D-Radio delivers best in class audio performance whilst its low power design enables long standby and talk times.”

Stephen Ngan, Executive Director of i.Tech added: “In designing the Clip D-Radio, it was imperative that the wireless audio quality was of an exceptionally high standard. As leader of the Bluetooth market, CSR was an obvious choice for us and has enabled us to offer our customers a headset that benefits from remarkable design and superior functionality.”
