By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Alienware, a manufacturer of desktop and laptop computers and entertainment systems, announced the launch of its Area-51 m17x, the latest addition to its redesigned Area-51 laptop computer product line.

Alienware’s previously launched 15.4-inch Area-51 m15x computer offered powerful performance and was a success. Building on that success, the new m17x laptop features a 17-inch, widescreen HD display designed for PC gamers, 3D content creators and multimedia enthusiasts.

The m17x is also, the company said, its fastest laptop yet. It features an Intel (News - Alert) Core 2 Extreme processor and dual SLI-enabled NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTX GPUs. It also sports a 500 GB mobile hard drive. Dual drives configured in a RAID 0 array and a 500GB Smart Bay drive offer users additional storage. Total capacity is 1.5TB, which can accommodate around 250 games, 375 full-length movies or nearly 400,000 songs.

“We pride ourselves in designing elite systems for consumers who absolutely refuse to settle for second best,” said Frank Azor, Executive vice-president for Alienware’s product and marketing groups. “The Area-51 m17x is, by far, the most aggressive, most powerful notebook computer Alienware has ever built.”

The new laptop computer also features the Alienware Command Center control panel, which has exclusive programs like the AlienFX customizable lighting feature and the AlienFusion power management system.

The m15x is ideally suited for road warriors or students who are constantly on the move but still want that boost of power Alienware delivers. It’s also geared toward professionals and hardcore enthusiasts who want pure, unbridled performance with the added benefit of portability.

Erik Reid, Director of Marketing, Mobile Products Group, Intel stated, “Intel’s Core 2 Extreme and Core 2 Duo mobile processors power the Area-51 m17x to performance results that are nothing short of spectacular and can even rival most desktop systems.
