Asustek Computer (Asus) is now selling a laptop computer, the Eee PC, featuring the Microsoft ( News - Alert) Windows XP Home Edition operating system. The company expects this particular computer will outsell its Linux-based edition by a ratio of 6 to 4 by the end of 2008, even though it costs twice as much as the cheapest Linux machines.
Shipments of the Eee PC are predicted by Asus to reach 5 million units during 2008, PC World said in a Thursday report.
Asus is currently selling two different versions of the Windows Eee PC laptop. The cheapest one is the Eee PC Surf XP, priced at roughly $408. Next up is the Eee PC 4G XP at about $473, PC World said. (Price may vary since these products are available globally and local taxes and fees vary.)
The Eee PC Surf XP features a 7-inch LCD screen, 4G-bytes of NAND flash memory for storage, and 512M-bytes of DDR2 DRAM (double data rate, second generation, dynamic RAM).
The Eee PC 4G XP offers an additional 4G-byte SD (secure digital) card for storage. It also offers a slightly better battery life of 3.5 hours, compared to 2.8 hours for the cheaper model. It also has a built on 3-megapixel digital camera.
Many people confuse the Asus Eee computers with the “XO” laptop being designed in conjunction with the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) Foundation, PC World noted. That’s because both laptop lines run on Intel ( News - Alert) Pentium M 650MHz -900MHz chips and weigh less than a kilogram (under 2.2 pounds). Also, Windows XP requires more storage capacity than was originally built onto the XO laptop.
