Lenovo Launches ThinkPad X300 Notebook PC

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Lenovo has launched its ThinkPad X300 notebook PC which is ultra thin and ultra portable and measures less than three-fourths of an inch at the thinnest part and weighs only 2.9 pounds.

The ThinkPad X300 notebook features solid-state drive storage, a LED backlit display, ultra long battery life and enhanced wireless connectivity. Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) has given it the Gold rating due to its environmentally-conscious technologies like low-voltage processors.

Peter Hortensius, senior vice president, Notebook Business Unit, Lenovo said, “The ThinkPad X300 notebook marks a major milestone for the ThinkPad family. ThinkPad has been pioneering notebook PC design for more than 15 years, raising the bar on innovation, and focusing on the core needs of ThinkPad users, namely quality, reliability and functionality.”

“Our customers told us that they wanted a notebook that was amazingly thin and light, but that they still wanted their battery options, their USB ports and of course, their DVD burner. Well the waiting is over, and it’s all there in the ThinkPad X300, our thinnest and lightest ThinkPad ever,” assured Hortensius.

The ThinkPad X300 notebook offers an optional built-in 7-millimeter slim DVD burner which is easy to use and flexible with multimedia capabilities. Besides it also has stereo speakers, a digital microphone and an integrated camera. The ThinkPad Roll Cage is made of carbon and glass fiber which gives extra durability and protects the notebook from falls common in mobile environments. Lenovo said that the same materials are used in building airplanes and Formula One race cars to make them light as well as strong.

Wireless connectivity options range from WiMAX, ultra-wideband/wireless USB, WWAN, WLAN and GB Ethernet. Besides the built-in GPS functionality enables mobile users to navigate by connecting to popular mapping programs. The notebook’s 13.3-inch LED backlight WXGA+ high resolution display is more bright and more energy efficient than LCD displays.

The integrated fingerprint reader, I/O port disablement and 32-byte password protection provides protection from intruders besides protecting data. The 1.8-inch 64 GB SSD provides better performance than the regular 2.5-inch hard drive. The technology makes the system shock resistant and energy efficient as there are no moving parts. The notebook is armed with the latest Intel (News - Alert) Centrino with vPro technology, nearly 4 GB memory and Lenovo’s ThinkVantage Technologies.

Mooly Eden, corporate vice president and general manager, Intel Mobile Platforms Group said, “The challenge we shared with Lenovo in its development of the ThinkPad X300 was in making things small without losing key capabilities, such as performance and battery life.”

“Intel’s contribution included developing packaging technology that enabled us to shrink the Intel Centrino platform by more than 50 percent, yet retain its high performance and low energy consumption,” added Eden.

The 2008 Olympic torch team will rely on both ThinkPad X300 notebook PC and Ideapad technology to support nearly 22,000 torchbearers, in more than 130 cities worldwide during the five continent marathon next month. The notebook will be used on the official aircraft of the Beijing 2008 Olympic for the Torch Relay and hence should be totally error free said Lenovo.
