Large-format LaserTV from Mitsubishi

By Radhika Raghunath, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Consumer electronics giant Mitsubishi (News - Alert) announced the next generation TV — a large-format laser-powered television, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The Laser TV combines the large size of a projection TV into a sleeker product with advanced picture quality. The viewing experience is projected to be far superior to the high-definition televisions currently available on the market. Mitsubishi partnered with REAL D, the 3D digital technology provider to showcase advanced high quality 3D content at the world premiere of the Laser TV.

Mitsubishi believes this product will meet consumers’ need for a richer and more fulfilling entertainment experience. Laser technology helps produce a wider spectrum of colors that is not possible with current high-definition technologies. High definition technologies produce a color spectrum that delivers less than 40% than what the normal eye can see.

“Mitsubishi has delivered significant technology innovations in the large-format television arena, and the debut of LaserTV further strengthens our position and track record for HDTV leadership,” said Frank DeMartin, vice president, marketing, at Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America. “LaserTV technology creates a portal to an intensely real and vivid world — beyond ordinary flat TV. It’s a true dimension experience.”

Unlike DLP (digital light processing) technology, which is used in rear-projection television and which uses mercury bulbs, the laser TV uses color lasers. These laser color beams produce colors that are more intense and precise. Though the laser bulbs cost more than their mercury counterparts, the colored lasers should last longer than the mercury bulbs. The laser television is expected to be available at retail outlets across United States later this year; pricing details have not been disclosed.

The Laser TV is also set to enhance the home theatre experience. Mitsubishi has partnered with Hollywood to deliver next-generation entertainment solutions and a complete 3D viewing experience. The sleeker dimensions of the Laser TV also allow it to be wall mounted.

Along with an ultimate viewing experience, the Laser TV is supposed to provide value for the cost conscious, and will be environmentally friendly and would consume less power. This is in contrast to today’s high definition televisions, which consume significantly large quantities of power compared to conventional analog televisions.
