Citi Joins Forces with Verizon Wireless to Help Victims of Domestic Violence

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributing Editor

The New York branch of financial services company Citi has given over 3,000 used mobile phones to help Verizon (News - Alert) Wireless with its phone recycling initiative, according to a recent news report. The proceeds will go to local organizations which help and support survivors of domestic violence.

Citi employees in New York worked together over a three-week period to collect used mobile phones and other phone devices. The efforts were part of Citi's Sustainable IT Program, and the results will go to help the Verizon Wireless National HopeLine Phone Recycling Program, which in turn supports victims of domestic violence. Citi has managed to contribute 6,564 devices in total, including 3,011 used mobiles and 3,553 other phone devices. On Saturday, 17th November 2007, 29 Citi workers handed their collection over to Verizon Wireless.

Citi CIO, Mary Adams, was managing the initiative on behalf of her company. Adams stated that the Citi workforce is ‘very proud' to make such a donation, as it will fulfill two purposes – it will help to prevent domestic violence and it will also reduce the burden on the environment through its recycling process. Adams spoke of Citi’s commitment to its regional communities, which was made evident by the number of workers who had volunteered for this initiative as well as for Global Community Day projects that had taken place across the world.

Citi has helped the cause of Verizon Wireless, working in partnership with the Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence. Verizon Wireless has been involved in raising money for this cause since January 1999. The company has managed to raise over $4 million for this cause through its nationwide collections of used mobile phones and other devices. Verizon Wireless has also donated over 45,000 phones to organizations working with victims of domestic violence. The used devices are either restored or recycled; the proceeds from this go to providing monetary aid, support services or equipment to agencies helping survivors of domestic violence.

Commissioner Yolanda B. Jimenez, on behalf of the Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence, explained how this initiative will help ‘connect domestic violence victims and their children with vital services through the New York City Family Justice Center.’

By joining forces, Citi and Verizon Wireless have extended and strengthened the capacity of local organizations dealing with domestic violence situations. Citi is an international financial services company which has branches in over 100 countries. Verizon Wireless is the largest American wireless company and data provider. Together they have over 200 million customers.
