Sony Increases Capabilities of Internals in VAIO S Notebook

By Jamie Epstein, TMCnet Web Editor

Sony has just announced it has added some astounding components to its lightweight VAIO S series of notebooks. These new SKUs are using dramatically increased specifications such as the new SandyBridge Core i5-2410M CPU, 4GB of DDR3 1333MHz RAM (News - Alert), 500GB hard drive, built-in 3G WWAN, AMD Radeon HD 6470M and a 13.3" screen with a 1366x768 resolution.

Features that already come standard with this model include, WiFi (News - Alert) 'n', Bluetooth 2.1, USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0 port.

The laptop also features hardware containing Sony's very own Fast Boot system that was designed to speed up the booting time. The laptop weighs a mere 1.7kg (3.75 lbs) along with the battery, but as of yet there has been no mention of what type of a battery will be used (Li-Ion, Li-polymer) or the capacity.

The announcement claims these new laptops will go on sale by the end of March. Details on the specific release date and pricing have not yet been released.

Because of the weight and size of the laptop, the price of the laptop will almost certainly increase due to the fact that power and portability aren’t cheap. The new addition to the former unit is the Mobility HD 6470M GPU, which according to Notebookcheck, should be based on the older 5000 series core.

Customers that purchase the new VAIO should expect enhanced performance, ranking even better than the Mobility HD 5470.

Just last month, Sony Corp announced it would begin to focus heavily on 3D technology, saying it would provide more content and launch 3D cameras and camcorders.

“2011 begins the next phase of our 3D strategy, a year in which 3D becomes personal," Sony CEO Howard Stringer told reporters at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. "Imagine watching your child's soccer games in 3D."

Sony will launch a 24-hour 3D television channel in partnership with Discovery and IMAX Corp this year, Stringer said. Stringer announced a list of upcoming Sony 3D, including "Men in Black 3" and the next installment of the "Spiderman" series.
