Apple Updates RAW Camera Capabilities; Facing Mounting Market Challenges

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Apple has an update for its Digital Camera Raw Compatibility in 3.6. According to this PowerPage report, this update is designed to extend RAW image compatibility for the Aperture 3 and iPhoto ’09 applications.

A 6.4 megabyte download, this update adds support for the following cameras:

  • Canon (News - Alert) EOS Rebel T3 / 1100D / Kiss X50
  • Canon EOS Rebel T3i / 600D / Kiss X5
  • Olympus E-5
  • Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100
  • Pentax (News - Alert) K-r
  • Pentax K-5

The update is also designed to address processing issues for specific cameras:

  • Nikon D7000
  • Nikon COOLPIX P7000
  • Panasonic (News - Alert) Lumix DMC-GF1
  • Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH2

The Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 3.6 does require Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later to install and run. It is also available via Mac OS X’s built-in Software Update feature.

Apple (News - Alert) also has plans to increase the size of the iPhone screen. The planned change is to four inches for the fifth generation of the device. According to a report from the DigiTimes, the increase in screen size will allow the device to better compete with the rival Google (News - Alert) Android platform in the 4- to 7-inch smartphone market.

It seems Apple customers are frustrated with the IVR platform currently in place. According to this TMCnet report, a tech support report by customer experience firm, Vocalabs, shows that Apple’s customers are dealing with less than standard service delivery and say the technology giant is getting worse in resolving problems. For instance, Apple is failing to resolve the issues customers have reported with its IVR solution.

The tablet leader has also been facing some tough competition from the emerging breed of tablets, according to industry experts. In August last year, TMCnet reported that though rival products will continue to emerge in the market, Apple’s iPad is unlikely to face a viable competitor until 2011, citing a market research from iSuppli Corp.

A recent report from Strategy Analytics, however, found that Apple’s share of the global market for tablets fell to 75 percent in the fourth quarter from 95 percent in the third quarter while the overall market increased 120 percent to almost 10 million units.

Apple has also been struggling to determine the best way to implement a policy where all subscriptions must go through its online marketplace, iTunes for all subscription sales. Anything currently available on iTunes, such as magazines, newspapers, videos and music is now offered on the subscription model on the site as well.
